Common Prayers

Prayer Practices

Centering Prayer

Find a quiet place. Sit in silence with the intention of being in God’s presence, letting go of any thoughts in order to focus on your union with him. Choose a “sacred word” to repeat slowly to yourself. Examples: “glory” or “holy.” If any thoughts or feelings surface, turn away from them and return to your word. Keep your mind fixed on God like this for 15-20 minutes.

Breath Prayer

A breath prayer is a simple, short prayer that is repeated in harmony with our breathing. A word or phrase is said while you inhale. Example: “I find rest”

A word or phrase is said while you exhale. Example: “in God alone.”

This simple practice serves as a reminder that God is present in every breath you take.

Prayers for specific purpose

Fixed Hour Prayer

Fixed hour prayer is a spiritual discipline of stopping at set times throughout the day to pray. Example: at 9am, 12pm, and 3pm.

Chose a short, structured prayer to recite at each moment of pause. Example: a Psalm / scripture / common prayer.

This practice cuts through our busyness and reorients us to God.
